Everyday should be a Sunday Morning.

For those of you who have followed my blog for some time, you know I post versions of The Velvet Underground’s “Sunday Morning” from time to time. Since this month’s subject on Music Passion is “Morning” I thought I would collect them all together in one post. “The Velvet Underground and Nico” has been voted the “most influential L.P. of the late 20th century”. Brian Eno once said, “Only five thousand people ever bought a Velvet Underground album, but every single one of them started a band”. Judging by the recent additions on this list, the influence continues and saturates almost every genre.

First up is the original V.U. version.

Next is my personal favorite, Lou Reed on David Letterman.

Vanessa St. James turned it into a modern pop anthem for today’s youth.

Beck recorded his own…

About Sound and Vision

It’s the first day of Fall quarter at Cark College, and I’m back on-line and ready to rock. This month’s Music Passion Theme word is Blues. A while back I posted Eric Clapton’s Smoking Power Blues rendition of “Don’t Think Twice” at Madison Square Gardens 1992 Bob Fest, honoring Bob Dylan’s 30 years in the music business. I also mentioned Niel Young’s set as being a personal favorite. He opened with “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues” and continued on into a powerful rendition of “All Along the Watchtower”. Both sets featured a House band comprised of Steve Cropper, Booker T and Donald “Duck” Dunn.

Tom Thumb’s Blues has been performed by Niel on a few later occasions, while “Watchtower” became a staple in his subsequent tours. This is the first performance of both songs, and they flat out ROCK!!!

This month the music passion is “Blues”

It is hosted by Allaboutlemon – go have a look see 😉

I’ve been thinking about the blues for a while.

Only song I can think of that has Blues in the title is Elton john – I guess that’s why they call it the blues.

Cool song, and I’ve always liked it, so it will be one of my blues contributions.

And then I got to thinking of a South African dude that does the blues – apparently very well.

The song I’ve chosen from him does not have blues in the title, but I think it fits the genre relatively well – let me know what you think of him, and if the song is indeed bluesy enough for the theme 😉

Do enjoy, and put up your own song for the month – always good to see what people…

CYMRY

Hey folks, I won the last Music Passion Award by Dolly at All About Lemon and had a whole month to think about what I wanted to use for a theme for September’s game. I have decided on “Blues”. Since I am a musician and blues is my main genre it is only fitting that I should choose it as our theme for September. SO with out further ado my choice of song for September’s Music Passion is Gary Moore’s “Still Got the Blues”

Othar “Otha” Turner (June 2, 1907 – February 26, 2003)[1] was one of the last well-known fife players in the vanishing American fife and drum blues tradition.[2] He was born in Madison County, Mississippi, and lived his entire life in northern Mississippi as a farmer, where in 1923, aged 16, he learned to play fifes fashioned out of rivercanes.

Turner’s Rising Star Fife and Drum Band (which consisted of friends and relatives) primarily played at farm parties.[2] They began to receive wider recognition in the 1990s. They appeared onMississippi Blues in Memphis Vol. 1 in 1993, followed by inclusion in many other blues collections. They released their own critically acclaimed album Everybody Hollerin’ Goat in 1998. This was followed by From Senegal to Senatobia in 1999, which combined bluesy fife and drum music with musicians credited as “the Afrossippi Allstars”.

The title, Everybody Hollerin’ Goat, refers to a tradition Turner began in the late 1950s of hosting Labor Day picnics where he would personally butcher and cook a goat in an iron kettle, and his band would provide musical entertainment. The picnics began as a neighborhood and family gathering; it grew over the years to attract musical fans, first from Memphis, Tennessee, and later from all over the world.

The song, “Shimmy She Wobble”, from Everybody Hollerin’ Goat was featured in the 2002 film, Gangs of New YorkMartin Scorsese, the film’s director, featured Turner in his 2003 PBS mini-series The Blues as a link between African rhythms and American blues. The concept was continued on the 2003 album Mississippi to Mali by Corey Harris. The album was dedicated to Turner, who died a week before he was scheduled to record for the album. His granddaughter and protégé Shardé Thomas, then 12 years old, filled in for the recording sessions.

Othar Turner died in Gravel Springs, Mississippi, aged 95, on February 26, 2003.[1] His daughter, Bernice Turner Pratcher, who had been living in a nursing home for some time suffering from breast cancer, died the same day, aged 48. A joint funeral service was held on March 4, 2003, in Como, Mississippi. A procession leading to the cemetery was led by the Rising Star and Fife Band, with Shardé Thomas, then 13 years old, at its head playing the fife.
